Clarity of Purpose: A Foundation for Harmony
"Quarrels are altogether contrary to the spirit of Auroville."¹ — The Mother
While this remains our ideal, our current reality as an aspiring collectivity often falls short. To address the root of persistent friction, we must evaluate the clarity of our shared foundation.
The Rationale for Integral Unity
Unneeded quarrels frequently stem from ambiguity. When the purpose of a collective endeavor is not precisely defined, cohesion dissolves, and progress is replaced by internal resistance. To maintain a purposeful and harmonious trajectory, the rationale for participating in the Auroville experiment must be made unambiguous.
The "conscious evolution of Auroville"—defined as “the collective experiment for the progress of humanity”¹—is not an abstract concept. It is documented and codified within our Three Core Documents.² These documents are inseparable and progressive; they provide the technical and spiritual specifications for our collective work.
The Prosperity System and Functional Intent
As we work toward the realisation of the Prosperity System³ envisioned by the Mother, participation in this economic framework must be based on a shared understanding of our goals. To ensure purposeful convergence, we must move beyond general "good will" and address specific intent:
- What is the specific nature of the progress humanity is moving towards within the Vision-Goal of the City of Dawn?
- Beyond general support, what is the specific purpose of your participation in this collective experiment?
Functional Roles and the Process of Transformation
Clarity of Purpose allows us to identify the distinctive roles required for a multi-generational project. Our founders, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, provided a clear stratification of engagement based on the individual’s commitment to the work of transformation.
To be what the Mother wants is to be transformed. The effort required is categorised as follows:
- For everyone: To prepare oneself for this transformation (the foundation of conscious good will).
- For a few: To begin the work of transformation (advancing beyond mere good will).
- For a very small number: To hasten the process of transformation⁴ (the advanced application of the Integral Supramental Yoga of our founders Sri Aurobindo and the Mother).
Harmony is not a passive state; it is a functional outcome of shared resonance. By returning to the Three Core Documents and clarifying our individual and collective purpose, we remove the primary source of "unneeded quarrels." This clarity is the prerequisite for the manifestation of the Life Divine in our material reality.
Finally, a vital point to clarify is that Auroville, as it has evolved since its inception and through the passage of the 1988 Act, functions as the Auroville Foundation. This legal structure and its mandates are grounded in the Rule of Law of India. The Government’s protection and support are intrinsic to manifesting Auroville's Core Vision and Purpose, in accordance with the charter of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
This relationship has been consistently reiterated by officials, including the former Auroville Governing Board Chairman and Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, and India's Ambassador to UNESCO VV Sharma in the following public address:
Understanding this integration between the legal administration provided by the Government of India and Auroville's progressive and multi-dimensioned spiritual, supramental and physical evolutionary goals is essential. Recognizing this framework serves as a necessary foundation for collaborative harmony, protecting the collective experiment from internal friction and ensuring the outer development supports the inner vision for all residents and participants as outlined on the official website https://auroville.org.
