What is Auroville's Raison d’être?
An aspiring True Aurovilian asks:
"The Deeper Question: What are we 'really' here for?
Beyond infrastructure or administration lies the central issue: What is Auroville’s raison d’être?"
My response:
With that prevailing perspective and narrative we can clearly see the central issue of the human problem: the false-separative perception of the mental consciousness.
Fundamentally We are all One, Unity is already. Thus All Life is Yoga.
So why continue falsely separating all the interconnected, interactive and complementary players in The Play of the One Eternal and Infinite? Which is All of Us. We.
With this paradox of the unity of opposites, Uniqueness or Specificity of Purpose must be factored in the evolutionary equation.
Auroville’s raison d’être is crystal clear even before its inception. Our integrated and proactive Three Core Ideal Vision-Goals says it all, again without separating anything from these Prime Directives:
A Dream - Auroville Charter - To Be a True Aurovilian
1954 - 1968 - 1970 - ...

With a definitive collective future-oriented Agenda:
"The whole earth must prepare itself for the advent of the new species, and Auroville wants to work consciously to hasten this advent."
This will of course take many more generations of humans who are still in Homo sapiens mode with an animal physiology that have basic and particular needs which must be adjusted accordingly with the progressive evolution of consciousness and life. With that we also need more conscious human parents who will give birth to human vessels for incarnating psychic beings, physical bridges for the Triple Transformation until the advent of this new species the Supramental being. This new species is envisioned with a non-animal physiology, a genderless, real-time mutable beingness, with a direct willpower over matter. Again, it will take many generations before this happens. But this is the specific Vision-Goal, not just the mere maintenance and propagation of the transitional Homo sapiens modality.
For now the preparation is the building of the City of Dawn for the inner and outer well-being of mutually aspiring and receptive humans: basic and particular needs, Integral Education, work, protection, wealth generation and venues for divine artistic expression. Protection is from the old-world undivine ego-minded tamasics and anarchists, the past that seeks to endure. With ego we mean the false-separative consciousness and ways of life that are still quite predominant, with very powerful adverse and hostile forces using unwitting humans both individual and from well-coordinated organisations coming from all over the world whose sneaky role is to undermine the Supramental progress. These must be proactively counter-checked and infiltration prevented, as much as possible. One of the main lessons of the Gita: upholding the getting-old but still predominant mental-human Dharma in conscious preparation for the New Supramental Dharma. For that the continued governance and administrative support of the Government of Mother India is indispensable and most welcome, and an integral part of Auroville's Vision-Goal if you will carefully review Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's writings. I can even say that the Avatar's Auroville can only happen within Bharat Mata. This crucial governmental support and protection can be deemed most obvious by first acknowledging one's own limited individual capacity in preventing the infiltration of adharmic adverse and hostile elements into the community. Thus this need of a collective effort and vigilance, including the participation of governments of other nations, an international collaboration, in consciously building and protecting this City of Dawn with its divine purpose, its reason for being. Sri Aurobindo has already spoken about these way back in his Five Dreams (with incisive commentary by an Aurovilian).
That is why Auroville’s raison d’être, this City of Dawn's specificity as the Conscious Cradle for the new species the Supramental being, must be the prevailing open public narrative.
We do not want to host nor invite the non-receptive, adverse and hostile individuals who, with their resistance and non-acceptance of our particularly radical revolutionary Supramental Vision-Goal, will create the dissonance and hence the unwanted chaos in this community specifically geared to the paradigm-shifting directives of our Avatar founders Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. We have learned from our painful lessons, yes? Or have we not?
Whatever our individual realisation and experience, is this raison d’être of Auroville clear enough?
Of course the day-to-day interactive dynamic collective developments in building the City of Dawn, in their integrality, is the hastened and intensified evolutionary process itself leading towards the above-mentioned Vision-Goal of a Divine Supramental Manifestation.
Circa 2025: We continue on with the best of our unique individual capabilities...
The opposite applies in the Unity in Diversity of us all.
Therefore at every dynamic moment as constant reminder:
"Little by little it will be revealed to us what this new species must be, and meanwhile, the best course is to consecrate oneself entirely to the Divine.
[When this was to be published at the end of 1971, Mother added:]
The only true freedom is the one obtained by union with the Divine. One can unite with the Divine only by mastering one’s ego."

ReplyDeleteWe would like to make Auroville the cradle of the Superman.
1966
... Then, seeing all this, the imminence of the catastrophe, there was a sort of call or aspiration to bring down something that could at least neutralize that error. And it came, an answer ... I can’t say I heard it with my ears, but it was so clear, so strong and precise that it was indisputable. I am obliged to translate it into words; if I translate it into words, I may say something like this: "That’s why you have created Auroville." ...

MESSAGE FOR UNESCO
Auroville is meant to hasten the advent of the supramental Reality upon earth.
The help of all those who find the world is not as it ought to be is welcome.
Each one must know if he wants to associate with an old world ready for death, or to work for a new and better world preparing to be born.
1 February 1972
To follow all the impulses of the lower nature is surely not the supramental way and has no place here.
What we want is to hasten the advent of the supramental, not at all to fall into the ugly condition of a humanity full of desires and low impulses.
10 July 1972
Auroville has been created for a progressive superhumanity, not for an infra-humanity governed by its instincts and dominated by its desires. Those who belong to the infra-humanity, the animal humanity, have no place here.
Auroville is for those who aspire for the supramental and make an effort to reach there.

(About a cyclone on the night of 5 December 1972)
It is a warning that nature is giving, that those who do not have the true spirit of Auroville will have to change or to go if they do not want to change.
7 December 1972
Everybody has to progress and become more sincere. Auroville has been created not for the satisfaction of the egos and their greeds, but for the creation of a new world, the supramental, expressing the divine perfection.
12 December 1972
Auroville has been created for a superhumanity, for those who want to surmount their ego and renounce all desire, to prepare themselves for receiving the supermind. They alone are true Aurovilians.
Those who want to obey their ego and satisfy all their desires belong to a subhumanity and have no place here. They must return to the world which is their true place.

And to fully, truly understand the raison d’être of Auroville is to ask the question: Who really are its founders Sri Aurobindo and the Mother?
